Lambda Theta Alpha Hosts 2004 National Convention in Irvine, California

National Headquarters, NJ—The National Board of Directors of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. hosted its annual National Convention themed “Piece by piece we come together…staying true to our legacy now and forever” on June 11-13 in Irvine, Calif. The National Board aims to use the convention as a means to honor the sorority's legacy and to inspire and achieve individual and communal aspirations through scholarly and professional excellence, community activism, and woman empowerment. Three hundred members were in attendance from across the nation to participate in the first national event to be hosted on the West Coast. The weekend’s events included professional development workshops, procedural training and bonding sessions of accentuating a legacy that started nearly 30 years ago by our beloved Founding Mothers.

The keynote and professional workshop speakers were as follows: Frances R. Aparicio (Director, Latin American and Latino Studies Program at the University of Illinois, Chicago); Mercedes Colwin, Esq. (Attorney, L’ABBATE, BALKAN, COLAVITA & CONTINI, L.L.P.); Ileana Digna Almaguer (Counselor for the Office of Special Programs and as EOF Residence Life Coordinator, at Rutgers University Cook College, LTA Founding Mother); Dr. Ron Binder ( Associate Director of Residence Life & Director of Greek Affairs, Bowling Green State University); Rosalina Camacho (Coordinator of the Women’s Cultural Resource Centers & Men’s Center at California State University, Fullerton); Samantha Ellman (Information Technology Manager-JL Shapiro Associates, Inc., LTA National Webmaster); Thomasa Gonzalez PH.D., L.C.S.W. (Associate Dean of Students/Director of Counseling and Health Services at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, LTA Founding Mother); Veronica Herrera (Learning Coordinator at Comerica Bank, Founding Sister of Beta Delta Chapter); Cynthia Ibarra (Client Financial Analyst-Citigroup); Sandra Penaherrera (Director, HACU National Internship Program, HNIP); Annette Pettit (Certified Food Service Manager Trainer and Food Safety Trainer for Cal Ploy Pomona Dining Services); Alexandria M. Rosales (Student Services Specialist, EOPS Cypress College); Ada Schulz (Nutritionist, California State University-Fullerton).

The sorority's constituency is genuinely grateful to the presenters as each one contributed much success for LTA's National Convention 2004.

The entirety of our workshop presentations enclosed important topics including the following: Anti-Hazing, Sisterhood and our Ritual; Business Etiquette; Career Development and Internships; The ABC’s of Credit and Money Management; the Myths and Truths about Greeks; F.U.T.U.R.O. A model for improving the state of Latino Youth; Nutrition Necessities for busy lives; Conflict and Change Management; Technology and LTA; Is dating for women fun or risky business?; as well as internal training for the incoming regional and national board members. As the National Board of Directors 2002-2004 have worked tirelessly to make this event one of the most memorable experiences, they have said their farewell to their previous positions. In addition, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. announced its National Board of Directors for 2004-2006, effective June 14, 2004.

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. is a philanthropic-based Greek letter organization whose mission includes fostering of academic excellence and promotion of community activism in all arenas, as well as the sponsorship of cultural and educational programs. Lambda Theta Alpha closes in on its 29th year with great pride, accomplishments and success that this organization has attained. “Piece by piece we come together…staying true to our legacy now and forever” as we unite together with determination as one, and accentuate the LTA Legacy that was started nearly 30 years ago, keeping the legacy alive and thriving.
