Lambda Theta Alpha Hosts Its 2003 National Convention in Houston, TX

National Headquarters, NJ — The National Board of Directors of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., hosted its annual National Convention themed "Discover the Face of LTA...The Universal Woman" on June 20-22, 2003 in Houston, Texas. The National Board of Directors aims to use the convention as a means to instill leadership skills that will develop our diverse membership into leading professionals and productive community activists. In short, the focus of the convention is to encourage and empower the universal women both academically and professionally. Approximately 300 members were in attendance from all across the country to participate in the weekend's events, which included professional development workshops as well as activities dedicated towards celebrating our accomplishments and nearly 30 years of sisterhood. Among the list of presenters were, Thomasa Gonzalez Ph.D., L.C.S.W. (Associate Dean of Students/Director of Counseling and Health Services at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, LTA Founding Mother), Christopher Alvarado (Program Director, College for Texans Campaign, Division of Participation and Success, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board), Walter Kimbrough, Ph.D. (Vice President Student Affairs Albany State University, expert on historically Black fraternities and sororities), Samantha Ellman (Information Technology Manager - JL Shapiro Associates, Inc., LTA National Webmaster), Jesus Pena, Esq., Luisa Ehrig (Investment Representative - Edward Jones) , Lisa Garces (Researcher - Women's Foundation of Minnesota & Consultant - El Fondo De Nuestra Comunidad, LTA National Alumnae President), and Brian Tenclinger (Assistant Director of Student Life - Texas A&M University College Station).
Workshop presentations covered valuable topics including time management, financial planning and investment, recruitment strategies, graduate school planning, risk management / anti-hazing and the law, securing organizational financial stability, a history of Black, Latin and Asian fraternalism, creative community service and event planning, as well as internal training for incoming regional board members. Among other exciting events, Lambda Theta Alpha launched its new national website and hosted the hit production "Yo Soy Latina" on Saturday evening.
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. is a philanthropic-based Greek letter organization whose mission includes the fostering of academic excellence and promotion of community activism in all arenas, as well as the sponsorship of cultural and educational programs. As Lambda Theta Alpha closes in on its 28th year, sisters nationwide reflect with great pride on the numerous accomplishments the organization has achieved since its inception. Together as women, as leaders, activists, mothers, wives, students and professionals; we grow stronger as Universal Women. |
